@Barry: Yikes... that's a scary question! Well, I took a lot of shots after this one, and the D90 appeared to be performing up to speed... and those later images seem ok. From the little I've read, it's only long exposures of the sun higher in the sky that has the potential to damage the sensor, or, more likely, the mirror, viewfinder and exposure meter. Apparently, conventional sunrise/sunset photography isn't likely to damage any part of the camera. I worry a little about looking through the viewfinder and damaging my eyes.
The settings for that particular shot were: f10, 1/2000, ISO=200, 155mm, and Nikon's "color matrix" (averaging) exposure metering. The posted picture is cropped to about 1/4 the original image. I did a little (primitive) post-processing of the image in CS2... minor shadow/highlight, brightness and color balance (backed off the red quite a bit) adjustments. Oh (by way of confession), and I did remove an ugly light fixture from the large tree to the right... a little trickery for the sake of art?

@Susan: When the clouds don't offer much variety, I'll always try to find a way, like changing the perspective, to keep things interesting. It's supposed to start warming up some... and cloud up, too... nothing but a good thing!
